In many post conflict situations truth-seeking is seen as a measure for dealing with a legacy of past abuse and oppression.

What is the healing power of truth-seeking? Is it possible to forgive extreme abuse for the sake of letting society “move on”? What is the relationship between truth and justice in this context?

Can truth and reconciliation processes solve political crises in societies that have suffered violent abuses and serious violations of democratic rights?

Speakers:

Paul van Zyl, Former Executive Secretary, South Africa Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC),

Jose Zalaquett, Former Commissioner of the Chilean TRC,

Michael Sahlin, Sweden`s next ambassador to Norway, and

Long Night’s Journey Into Day is a documentary that tells four stories of Apartheid in South Africa, as seen through the eyes of the Truth and Reconciliation commission. Session 2

13:15 Screening:  State of Fear

Based on the findings of the Peruvian Truth and Reconciliation Commission, State of Fear blends personal testimony, history, and archival footage to tell the story of escalating violence in Peru, and how the fear of terror undermined democracy, making the country a virtual dictatorship where official corruption replaced the rule of law. (94 Minutes). State of Fear has been screened at Oslo Dokumentarkino before, in October 2005 and in March 2006. Download PDF about the film.

In all my years of working in the field of international human rights, I have never seen a film that so successfully describes a national struggle for justice and its universal implications.  State of Fear is a must-see film for educators and activists working in the field of international human rights and Latin American studies.

- Juan E. Méndez, President, International Center for

Transitional Justice and United Nations Special

Adviser on thePrevention of Genocide

Discussion: Javier Ciurlizza, former Executive Director of the Peruvian Truth and Reconciliation Commission,  Jose Zalaquett, former Commissioner Chilean TRC and Michael Sahlin, General Director at The Folke Bernadotte Academy in Sweden and Sweden`s next ambassador to Norway.
