Favela Rising follows a few residents of a crime-ridden neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro who used music to change their community radically. These dedicated young men gave children fated to become drug soldiers a place to go and responsible role models they could admire.

The film focuses in particular on one organiser, Anderson Sa, and his determination to change his life and the lives of those around him. He rallies his community to fight against the violent oppression enforced by teenage drug armies and sustained by corrupt police.

Since the film was made the AfroReggae music initiative has grown into health, education and information projects around literacy for preschool children, domestic violence and contact with the elderly. The result is that some of the worst slum areas are now being recognised as a hotbed of culture and creativity. It is a community that seems to be working.

Introduction by Christian Schøien on whether grass-roots movements or NGO brokered negotiations can result in long-term change in crime and drug dominated societies.

This event is brought to you by NORAD Filmklubb and Oslo Dokumentarkino. We aim to stimulate dialogue and provide an engaging way of approaching topics relevant to our work and our lives. We believe film can build a platform of awareness and understanding of today’s complex world in a way that other media can no longer achieve.
